How to Achieve Healthy Pregnancy for Overweight and Pregnant Women

It is a proven fact that overweight pregnancy comes with high risk of birth defects, miscarriage, and difficult childbirth. Even when you do not face any difficulty during the pregnancy, the babies will still have some health problems.

The health problems that usually occur when pregnant moms are overweight are Gestational diabetes, Gestational hypertension (high blood pressure),and Preeclampsia and eclampsia.

If you happen to have high BMI (body mass index) when you try to get pregnant, it is wise to consult the dietitian to lose some weight in the healthy ways, before even trying to conceive. Losing some extra weight will increase your chances of conception and ease the whole pregnancy process.

If you’re already pregnant and having an overweight problem, it is not a good idea to be on a diet. You will want to make sure the baby gets as much nutrition as it needs. What you can do now is to watch what you eat carefully. Being on weightloss plan while pregnant can jeopardize the health of your child. Doctors or certified professionals can help you plan your daily meals to ensure you go through the process without compromising your health as well as of your child.

It is not true to say that you should not do any exercise while being pregnant. Studies have shown that it does not have direct connection to miscarriage. On contrary, certain types of exercises actually reduces the risk of miscarriage as you become adequately active in your daily activities, your immune system works for effectively at defending you from catching contagious diseases which can lead to birth defects. The following are safe workouts for moms-to-be:

Try this at the gym:

- rowing – stair climbing machine – try to go for the low density classes – water classes – yoga or pilates (good for your heart as well as building muscle mass and increase your flexibility!) – dance – any kind is great, just avoid lots of leaping and jumping, or anything that involves something closer to acrobatics…

Don’t belong to a gym? Take your workout outside! Sunny days with moderate temperatures are there for you to enjoy your light workouts in the park or around the neighborhood. You can simply get yourself a workout DVD and do that from home.

One thing to keep in mind is you might not want to get into sports that come with potential injuries to your abdomen like roller blading, skating, horse back riding or soccer.

It is especially important to engage in this type of exercise 2-4 days a week during pregnancy. Here are the benefits you will get from regular exercise:

- have an easier, problem free pregnancy – manage excess weight gain – decrease swelling of hands and feet – sleep better – reduce constipation – fight fatigue – gain/maintain strength and endurance in preparation for labor – get back to your post-pregnancy body faster

Being overweight and pregnant is not necessarily something you should be worried about as long as you are taking control over the situation instead of giving in. In fact, there are a lot of women who have had successful pregnancies and labors even though they were overweight. They were able to do so by taking charge of their eating habits, and maintaining healthy lifestyle.
