Studies have shown that lack of sleep has an effect on weight gain and blood sugar control. In addition, studies have also shown most people do not get the correct amount of sleep they need for their body to function correctly.

Women are twice as likely than men to suffer from sleep insomnia. Insomnia can consist of having trouble falling asleep, waking up through the night and not being able to fall back to sleep. Waking up to early in the morning and not being able to go back to sleep is also related to insomnia.

Insomnia can last from one night to several weeks or months. Insomnia can be caused by stress, medications, depression or some type of medical condition.

A few important steps to try is to set and stick with healthy sleep habits. You should first set a time for bed each night. You may need to do some type of relaxation method such as concentrated breathing, meditation or yoga. Relaxing music can help to settle you down. Warm decaffeinated tea is nice also.

Also set a time for getting up each day. Tell yourself, I am not going to get up until my set time each morning. You may need to gradually adjust your time each morning for your body to adjust.

Studies have shown too little sleep can also cause weight gain. Your appetite control is not functioning correctly and your blood sugar control is also not functioning correctly. The risk of diabetes can increase, along with weight gain.

Try the following things mentioned to improve your sleep habits. If nothing seems to work, you may need to talk to your doctor to see if you need some type of sleep medication.

1. Remember, go to bed and get up the same time each day.2. Don’t eat a heavy meal before bed. Try not to eat anything after dinner.3. Stop all caffeine by early afternoon.4. Take an evening walk.5. Listen to relaxing music.6. Don’t watch the news before bed.7. Don’t watch TV in bed.8. Don’t have the “nightcap” right before bed. This can cause anxiousness.9. If you have kids, don’t let them sleep with you.10. Only use your bed for sex and sleep.

Sweet Dreams!
